Myth Busters: Let’s Talk About the HPV Vaccine!
While recently talking with a college student about HPV (human papilloma virus), I was shocked to know she had never heard of the HPV vaccine before!
No, this vaccine is not required but that doesn’t mean it’s not important. Let’s breakdown some common myths about this powerful and impactful vaccine for your daughter’s health.
Myth #1: My tween or teen is too young for the HPV vaccine.
✅Fact: The earlier the HPV vaccine is received, the better it can protect from cancers and genital warts by building stronger immunity. It is recommended for ages as early as 9. If given before age 15, only two doses are needed vs 3 doses once they are 15 or older.
Myth #2: The HPV vaccine is only for girls.
✅Fact: This vaccine is for everyone, because HPV can affect anyone. HPV can cause cancers of not only the cervix but also the throat, penis and more. This is why it is so important everyone is protected from HPV transmission before any exposure to the virus.
Myth #3: Talking about this vaccine causes teens to think about having sex.
✅Fact: There has been NO proof linking the HPV vaccine to increased rates of sexual activity. One way parents can start this conversation is by linking it to other healthy habits and check-ups. For example, “Just like we do regular doctor visits and flu shots, this vaccine is part of staying healthy.”
The HPV vaccine is ALL about prevention to build immunity to this very common virus. Let’s prevent undue stigma to provide protection from cancers for a lifetime!
